Gregorio Leti (1630-1701), libertino, apostata del cattolicesimo, transfuga nella calvinista Ginevra, scrittore perennemente all’indice dei libri proibiti, ad appena un anno dalla morte del protagonista, pubblica la vicenda di un amore singolare, sfrontato e peccaminoso, che ha dato materia ai pettegolezzi di tutta Italia (e non solo). Fingendosi un testimone oculare e attingendo sicuramente a fonti attendibili, Leti rispetta i più importanti dati storici, ma non esita a inventare caratteri, situazioni, eventi, colloqui, corrispondenze, fino a trasformare la sua narrazione in un’'opera mista di storia e d’invenzione' ovvero in un autentico 'romanzo storico'.
