Esta narración, escrita en 1850, relata las peripecias de Nancy Gardner Prince, una afroamericana libre, a lo largo de su infancia, su residencia en la Rusia imperial de 1824 a 1833, su regreso a Boston y sus dos visitas a la exótica Jamaica durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. El periplo vital que la autora traza en el texto y el retrato que dibuja de sí misma como viajera incansable la alejan del estereotipo victimista tan apreciado en la época y la transforman en una mujer audaz y autosuficiente, capaz de cruzar océanos y mares en busca de una identidad difícil de hallar en la Norteamérica de las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. El resultado es una narración fascinante que invita, quizá como pocas otras, a seguir indagando en la vitalidad que se oculta entre las líneas escritas por las mujeres afroamericanas.
