Un ambiente hidrogeológico es considerado como la representación compuesta de rasgos geológicos, topográficos y climatológicos que afectan y controlan el movimiento del agua subterránea. Ésta forma la base del sistema de evaluación de la vulnerabilidad determinada en este trabajo. Mediante ésta es posible hacer generalizaciones sobre la contaminación potencial del agua subterránea. Aquí se dan a conocer los resultados de la vulnerabilidad del acuífero costero del valle de Guasave mediante la metodología DRASTIC llevada a un sistema de información geográfica (DRASTIC, D = profundidad del agua, R = recarga neta, A = medio acuífero, S = tipo de suelo, T = topografía, I = impacto de zona vadosa, C = conductividad hidráulica del acuífero). Tales parámetros se representan a través de mapas con información recopilada de la literatura, georreferenciándose para ser integrado a un Sistema de Información Geográfica, (SIG). Con los índices DRASTIC y la carga contaminante se determina el riesgo a la contaminación del acuífero, generándose mapas que dan la pauta a seguir para un modelo de desarrollo sostenible o sustentable del acuífero del Valle de Guasave.
