En el libro X de la República afirma Platón que “es ya antigua la disputa entre filosofía y poesía” (607b). Realmente no era tan antigua en el siglo IV a.e.c. y fue Platón en gran medida quien originó y alimentó esa disputa. Dicha afirmación fue lo que motivó el presente trabajo. El libro consta de una Introducción donde se aclaran algunas de las diferencias fundamentales que existen entre la concepción que tienen los poetas arcaicos de la poesía y la que tiene Platón. A continuación aparecen cuatro escritos que tratan sobre el debate de Platón con los poetas, que pretenden confrontar la teoría filosófica sobre la poesía, con otro tipo de reflexión sobre la literatura que es la que se expresa a través de las palabras de los poetas arcaicos griegos. Se trata de ver cómo se representa y cómo entienden la poesía y su labor tres de los grandes poetas de Grecia y ponerlos a dialogar con Platón y, muchas veces, a defenderse de él. 10
