Cristina Ayala (1856-1936) es el pseudónimo literario de María Cristina Fragas, quien nació y vivió en el poblado de Güines, cercano a La Habana, y publicó su único volumen poético, Ofrendas mayabequinas, en 1926. Desde el punto de vista de la literatura afrodescendiente del Caribe y de América Latina, Ayala es la autora central de la tercera promoción de escritores afrodescendientes en Cuba. En palabras de María Alejandra Aguilar Dornelles, la suya constituye una voz excepcional [...] en América Latina no solo por haber nacido en cautiverio, sino también porque su labor literaria la vinculó a reconocidos intelectuales como Juan Gualberto Gómez, Miguel Gualba, Vicente Silveira y Úrsula Coimbra de Valverde.Amauri Gutiérrez Coto (La Habana, 1974) se doctoró en University of Arizona y es profesor en Lafayette College, Pensilvania. Ha publicado Acerca de lo negro y la africanía en la lengua literaria de Motivos de Son (2002), Orígenes y el paraíso de la eticidad (2011), El grupo Orígenes de Lezama Lima o el infierno de la trascendencia (2012) y, en esta misma colección, Canon, historia y archivo. La segunda promoción de escritores afrodescendientes en el siglo xix cubano (2024), el primer volumen de una trilogía sobre la diáspora africana en el Caribe.
