'Las cosas suceden' es una antología integrada por nueve cuentos que van de la literatura fantástica al policial negro con historias inquietantes y personajes complejos que nos van develando las zonas grises de la condición humana. Lo fantástico no aparece en estos cuentos bajo la forma de seres o hechos extraordinarios, sino de hechos y personajes aparentemente comunes, simples, que de pronto vulneran la lógica cotidiana. Una mujer cuya imagen queda registrada en una foto en la que no debería haber salido ('Perfil de Morena'), la imposible intersección de dos existencias paralelas e incompatibles de una misma persona ('La mirada de Juan Prado'), un viaje en colectivo que se transforma de a poco en una travesía muy diferente ('Las cosas suceden') son ejemplos de lo antedicho.Los protagonistas de estas historias son seres excluidos o autoexcluidos de la felicidad, que viven sumidos en un halo de melancolía, añorando una vida que no fue, o que ya no es. Son  personas conscientes de ese fracaso y resignadas a afrontarlo como si todo hubiese sido ya resuelto por un destino implacable que no se puede remediar. En ese sentido, el personaje más impresionante del libro es el carnicero de 'La materia hierve su cólera cerrada', un individuo traspasado por la frustración, al que le basta con afilar su cuchilla y limpiarse la sangre de la carne en el delantal para transmitirnos la tremenda violencia latente que lo habita y que está a punto de estallar.
