En octubre de 1517 el monje Martín Lutero había planeado un debate sobre la práctica de vender indulgencias. Como nadie participó en la discusión, decidió enviar sus tesis directamente al cardenal Alberto de Bandeburgo, elector y arzobispo de Maguncia. Al mismo tiempo, se dice que clavó sus “95 tesis” en la puerta de la Iglesia de Todos los Santos de Wittenberg, que en aquel momento servía como una especie de valla publicitaria. Con la ayuda de la imprenta Lutero logró difundir rápidamente su radical mensaje y desató un debate que sacudió los fundamentos de la Iglesia en un mundo en que la fe cristiana estaba dominada por la Iglesia católica romana. Los dogmas y normas de la Iglesia dirigían las vidas de las personas, que veían a Dios como una figura crítica que nunca dejaba que un error quedara impune y la gente pagaba por el perdón de sus pecados.
