Chile es un país en vías de desarrollo que se ubica muy lejos de los principales centros de ciencia de punta, pero tiene características naturales únicas que pueden colocarlo en la frontera de la investigación a nivel mundial: Extensas áreas de cielos excepcionales para explorar el universo y desarrollar la astronomía; acceso privilegiado al territorio antártico y subantártico con su potencial de investigación; eventos naturales extremos, como terremotos, erupciones volcánicas e inundaciones, que por su reiterada ocurrencia permiten el estudio y desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías que ayuden a anticipar y resistir mejor estos fenómenos; inmensas extensiones de tierras expuestas al sol en condiciones únicas y que posibilitan nuevos estudios en energía solar; o ser una incógnita de cómo este territorio permitió el desarrollo humano en los ambientes más inhóspitos del planeta, entre otras, son todas grandes oportunidades de estudio científico. El desafío que plantea este libro es aprovechar estas características únicas y lograr que los mejores expertos del mundo utilicen el territorio nacional como un nuevo y revolucionario laboratorio natural para trabajar en conjunto con sus pares locales en las áreas en que Chile tiene ventajas comparativas para hacer ciencia con impacto nacional y mundial. La invitación a participar de este nuevo proyecto se abre a científicos, académicos, políticos, emprendedores, y a todos quienes creen en lograr nuevas y mejores oportunidades de progreso y calidad de vida a través de tecnologías novedosas, sustentables e inclusivas. 10
