La monja alférez es una de las más bizarras comedias de enredo escritas en el Siglo de Oro. La trama está enmarcada en un pasaje de la vida de Catalina de Erauso. Tras escapar vestida de hombre al Perú, allí se convierte en el alférez Guzmán. Por entonces, tiene un romance amoroso con doña Ana, a quien también ama su amigo don Diego.Guzmán, en parte por esto último, en parte por defender su honor, hiere y mata a varios hombres en duelos y reyertas. Entre ellos, se incluye su propio hermano -que la busca para restituirla forzosamente a España y a su sexo.Condenada a muerte por sus hechos de sangre, los personajes toman distintos partidos ante la sentencia. La comedia gira en torno al tema del honor. El autor pretende mediante su insólito tratamiento del trasvestismo y el homoerotismo, establecer una igualdad entre los sexos. Dicha igualdad se muestra en esta obra tanto con la pluma como con la espada.Existen numerosas versiones de esta autobiografía entre ellas, esta de Juan Pérez de Montalbán y la de Juan Antonio Mateos, ambas publicadas en Linkgua. La historia de la monja alférez es un texto de referencia en los estudios feministas y sobre la condición histórica de la mujer.
