Considerado el fundador de la novela de Puerto Rico, Manuel Zeno Gandía es uno de los escritores más destacados de la tendencia naturalista. Su obra más conocida es La charca (1894), que muestra la pobreza, el vicio y el dolor. Otra de sus novelas es Redentores. Zeno también escribió relatos, poesía, crítica literaria y ensayo.La descripción del medio ocupa un lugar primordial en todas las novelas de Zeno. Esta novela transcurre un espacio que se halla dominado por fuerzas negativas de diversa naturaleza. Allí se mueven una serie de personajes positivos que acaban siendo vencidos por el poder implacable y fatal del entorno.En La charca la trama se localiza en un entorno rural, que Zeno describe como un espacio donde domina la incultura. En el que las relaciones humanas se hallan marcadas por los instintos más elementales. El camino que lleva al poblado de La charca se describe de comomás propio para cabras y gatos monteses que para seres humanos.Esta novela es una espléndida radiografía de la miseria que rodea a los jornaleros. También es una firme denuncia de los peores vicios sociales (como la usura) y una crítica a las conciencias de los ilustrados. La charca retrata a esta clase social y lo muestra incapaces de llevar a la práctica los cambios sociales que, en teoría, defienden.
