En La catedral, de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, Gabriel Luna regresa a la Catedral de Toledo, sitio en que nació y creció. Su familia trabaja en la catedral durante generaciones como jardineros. Él estudió en su seminario; pero a punto de ordenarse, estalla la guerra carlista y Gabriel combate por la causa del pretendiente a la Corona. La guerra termina y, en vez de regresar, Gabriel se marcha a Francia. Allí aprende el idioma, hace nuevas amistades y lee a Darwin, Kropotkin y Bakunin. Viaja por Europa implicado en conjuras anarquistas, lo persiguen, y lo encarcelan en la cárcel de Montjuich. Tras dos años de penurias, enfermo y debil, regresa a la Catedral de Toledo. Su hermano Esteban lo acoge. Gabriel se muestra pasivo y dócil, ante los consejos de este, mientras recupera algo de su maltrecha salud. Luego entabla amistad con el resto de los vecinos, el campanero, el zapatero, el perrero, que es sobrino suyo, don Luis, el maestro de capilla. Entonces renace el Gabriel anarquista, defensor de los marginados. La mayoría del grupo cree que Gabriel es solo un hombre de palabras y deciden iniciar una rebelión que termina en tragedia.
