El libro completa el proyecto iniciado en el volumen anterior, que estaba orientado hacia el estudio de las tecnologías políticas en el pensamiento tardío del filósofo francés Michel Foucaut; estudia en detalle el problema de las -artes de la existencia- en el mundo griego, romano y cristiano, al que Foucault dedicó sus cinco últimos cursos en el Collège de France, y examina las consecuencias del abandono del -modelo bélico- de análisis para comprender las luchas políticas contra el neoliberalismo contemporáneo. Según Foucault, estas luchas deberían dirigirse exclusivamente hacia el ámbito de la subjetividad, última trinchera de resistencia frente a la -gubernamentalización-. 10
