Amadeo I es la tercera novela de la quinta y última serie de los Episodios Nacionales. En su contexto histórico, esta novela de Pérez Galdós comienza con la entrada en Madrid de Amadeo de Saboya, llamado por las Cortes para ser coronado rey de España. Su primer acto es asistir a las exequias de Prim, recientemente asesinado en atentado terrorista, supuestamente en una conspiración organizada y financiada por Antonio de Orleans. El futuro rey, aunque bien recibido por el pueblo y la clase media, es rechazado por la aristocracia, en un ambiente político de gran inestabilidad en el que se suceden diversos gobiernos: el de Ruiz Zorrilla, el de Sagasta y finalmente el de Serrano. Asistimos también a una nueva insurrección carlista, seguida de una republicana y también un atentado contra Amadeo I.Galdós viste los acontecimientos con una trama en la que seguimos la narración del republicano Proteo Liviano, periodista, gran orador y, como suele suceder en los argumentos de estos episodios, un donjuan cuyas aventuras le llevan a numerosos lances y conquistas amorosas. También ejerce gran protagonismo en la novela el personaje de Mariclío, una mujer que viene a personificar la historia de España, en un giro irónico muy propio de Galdós. El personaje utiliza a Proteo para que nos haga de observador tanto a los lectores como a ella misma. Desde el punto de vista del estilo, el relato se convierte a veces en un cuento fantástico, trastocando los conceptos de tiempo y espacio, huyendo incluso de la correspondencia cronólogica tan cuidada siempre por el autor.
