El fotógrafo descansado es Felipe Ceballos, un artista ambulante que desarrolla su labor en los valles del Pirineo de Huesca. De su mano llega a la zona otro artista itinerante, un proyectista de cine (Hugo Carretero) que se encargará de mostrar a los pobladores de los valles, entre ellos la numerosa comunidad ferroviaria encargada de la construcción de la nueva línea férrea y de la estación internacional de Canfranc, la magia de aquel nuevo arte. Coincidiendo con algunas de estas proyecciones de cine tienen lugar algunas muertes, accidentales o no, que despiertan los recelos hacia a aquellos artistas foráneos. ''El fotógrafo descansado'' es una historia que cubre a saltos algo anárquicos prácticamente la totalidad del siglo XX, dentro de un entorno político convulso que sirve a un narrador anónimo para contar una historia en la que tiene poca importancia la autoría de los hechos que se narran, y sí mucho más las razones que los motivan.
