Hoy día ya sabemos que entre el 60-70% del patrimonio genético de las Islas Británicas procede de Iberia. La península fue refugio glaciar en la última Edad de Hielo de muchas gentes que no podían ocupar la Europa cubierta de hielo (incluidas las Islas Británicas). Poco después del máximo glaciar (hacia 18.000 años antes del presente), grupos humanos del norte de Iberia fueron los colonizadores de las Islas Británicas, las que gradualmente se iban desprendiendo de su capa de hielo. (1) Está claro que los marcadores genéticos del cromosoma Y (línea paterna), mitocondriales (línea materna) y los marcadores genéticos HLA (línea paterna y materna) nos dicen que la mayor parte del patrimonio genético de Irlanda, Gales, Escocia e Inglaterra procede de la migración de hace 15-17.000 años de Iberia hacia las Islas.
