El recorrido por estas páginas se llena de experiencias frustradas y sentimientos encontrados. Su infancia y adolescencia coincide con la etapa del compromiso revolucionario, de la esperanza en el hombre nuevo. Sin embargo, a medida que transcurre la edad adulta, se van desmoronando las creencias o van siendo sustituidas por otras como una forma de refugio ante la pérdida de referentes. Es entonces cuando comprende que la búsqueda del hombre perfecto es imposible y que otro poder amenaza los sueños de la mayor parte de la población. De fondo narrativo aparece la historia de Cuba en los últimos cuarenta años, aunque sobretodo del último decenio. El periodo especial, la escasez, el hambre, las contradicciones del socialismo, las paradojas de las reformas económicas; pero también la añoranza de los que se van para siempre, familiares y amigos que se exilian y no volvemos a ver, gentes con las que compartimos una ilusión pero que se marchan. Queda un recuerdo con el que pasar los largos días de la provincia cubana.
