Este libro se propuso estudiar distintos tipos de dinámicas intermunicipales en el Suroccidente colombiano, seleccionando los catorce municipios más relevantes del espacio abordado comprendido por los departamentos de Nariño, Cauca y Valle del Cauca, para dar cuenta de la configuración y características de diferentes redes de ciudades entre estos y, desde allí, de la existencia de territorialidades que configuran subregiones particulares a lo largo del suroccidente en cuestión. La pregunta de base que orientó nuestra investigación fue: ¿qué define las redes entre las catorce principales ciudades del suroccidente colombiano, en términos de infraestructuras, mercados, migraciones y procesos de integración política, desde 1988 a 2010? Como lo señaláremos, las respuestas obtenidas constituyen la base de un análisis que pretende no solamente develar y caracterizar las principales redes de ciudades del suroccidente en cuestión, sino -desde allí- la existencia de territorialidades diferenciadas que den cuenta de las subregiones a lo largo de esa gran región suroccidental comúnmente encapsulada dentro de fronteras político-administrativas particulares. 10
