En este poemario al-Ma`arri parte de los temas, imágenes y convenciones de la poesía árabe preislámica para elaborar un amplio conjunto de poemas, en los cuales, siempre a través del manierismo y de un culteranismo propio de un gran erudito, nos ofrece un cuadro en el que destacan los valores morales preislámicos, la reflexión sobre la condición humana y los conflictos religiosos de su momento. Los textos son de una extraordinaria riqueza, pues a menudo pueden ser leídos en una clave que los acerca a la obra de gnósticos y espirituales musulmanes de la Edad Media. Según la fuente a la que acudamos encontramos diferentes traducciones a este título (Saqt al-zand). Así por ejemplo, la Enciclopedia del Islam lo denomina The first spark of the tinder. Junto a sus poemas de juventud, este poemario incluye poemas laudatorios a personajes caídos en la batalla y elegías, como las que dedica a su madre, a su padre y a algunos amigos. La traducción de una amplia selección de casidas (alrededor de 1.500 versos castellanos) intenta reflejar los principales rasgos del original: el pensamiento dialógico, la medida y la monorrima, ofreciendo, además, una inmersión suficiente para que el lector capte la compleja trama de referencias, alusiones y palimpsestos que hacen de este poemario una mina de ideas, datos e imágenes, manejados por quien unía su ingente saber con su exigente postura personal ante las grandes preocupaciones éticas y metafísicas.
