Le invasioni biologiche sono la seconda fonte di distruzione degli ecosistemi. Ma la conoscenza dei taxa invasivi in Burundi è ancora lacunosa. Per supportare i gestori delle piante invasive, è stato condotto uno studio nelle paludi del fiume Ruvubu, il più grande fiume del Burundi. L’obiettivo era quello di: Effettuare un inventario floristico; evidenziare la diversità delle piante invasive e determinare un gradiente floristico. Per stabilire la ricchezza floristica è stato utilizzato il metodo fitosociologico. La determinazione delle piante invasive ha comportato la combinazione del tasso di copertura medio e delle caratteristiche biologiche della plasticità specifica delle specie dominanti. I risultati hanno evidenziato 161 specie in 125 generi e 54 famiglie. Sono state selezionate 13 specie invasive accertate e altre sette potenziali, distribuite in sei famiglie botaniche, due delle quali (Poaceae e Asteraceae) sono le più rappresentate. Il gradiente floristico delle piante invasive aumenta da monte a valle.
