Este libro, editado por Charles Brewer Carías y Allan R. Brewer Carías, recoge el texto de la Biografía del General Rafael Capó escrita por Rafael Carías Capó en 1974, con base en la correspondencia privada y oficial de este famoso militar. El General Capó formó parte del Ejército Nacional de Venezuela entre 1834 y 1866, habiendo participado en los múltiples conflictos militares que se desarrollaron con motivo de las guerras civiles, incluyendo las guerras federales (1859-1863) originadas, entre otros factores, por las pugnas políticas entre los partidos conservador y liberal. Luchó en consecuencia bajo las órdenes del General José Antonio Paéz, hasta salir al exilio en 1862, habiendo regresado al país para combatir al régimen federal ya instalado en Venezuela, después de servir en el ejército de Benito Juarez en México. Falleció pasado por las armas en 1866 por orden del General Jorge Sutherland, Gobernador de Maracaibo.
