Roberto Luque Escalona was born in Holguin, Cuba. He studied Political Sciences at the University of Havana as well as History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He lives in Miami since 1992 where he works as a journalist with his own column in the weekly newspaper, LIBRE. This is his eighth novel. A black female terrorist, a fugitive of American Justice and for which a two million Dollar reward has been offered, has lived in Cuba for three decades under the protection of the Cuban government. Rick Garza, a sheriff from a county in South Florida, who has enjoyed a long and cordial friendship with an official from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, as both were classmates at the University of California at Berkeley, comes up with the idea of kidnapping her when he detects signs of discontent in his friend and ends up convincing him to participate in the abduction. On the other hand, the admiration of the former female black panther for the Cuban revolution has been deteriorating. The discovery of a statue of the devil in an inner courtyard of Havana's Capitol building becomes a kind of catharsis that will trigger the action. But the abduction becomes complicated by another high official of the MININT, who was also charged with her and who also happens to be her lover. Devil's Island, located a few miles off the Atlantic coast of South America, was part of the system of penal colonies in French Guiana that garnered the sinister fame that originated in the prisons of tierra firme surrounded by marshes and forests, where life was really hellish. In contrast, the Devil's Island had a healthy climate and prisoners were not locked up, However, since prisoners they were, they could not get out of there and if they tried, they would face the danger of sharks.
